In Texas children who miss a certain number of school days can be sent to truancy court. Truancy is a Class C Misdemeanor punishable up to $500. Senator John Whitmire filed a bill to make truancy a civil, rather than criminal, offense. Special Education students are disproportionately referred to court for truancy, according to a report by Texas Appleseed.
